Autonomous Driving Systems
3 Questions for… Thomas Günther, CARIAD
“The best innovation happens through collaboration“
Thomas Günther, Chief Launch Officer of CARIAD, will be one of the speakers at the Automobil-Elektronik Kongress 25.
CARIAD
With the Automated Driving Alliance, CARIAD and Bosch are building Europe’s only scalable software platform for assisted and automated driving. In this exclusive interview, CARIAD Chief Launch Officer Dr. Thomas Günther explains how the partnership leverages AI, agile software cycles, and industrialization expertise to bring smarter mobility to all vehicle classes.
What
are the primary objectives of the Automated Driving Alliance between CARIAD and
Bosch?
We
joined forces in the Automated Driving Alliance to take on one of the most
complex technological tasks–creating safe automated driving solutions. We are
the only European initiative building a scalable software platform for assisted
and automated driving. Our mission is to democratize this technology, making it
affordable and accessible across all vehicle classes within the Volkswagen
Group. From the very beginning, we have put safety at the center of our
development process. Making mobility safer is our guiding parameter.

How
does this collaboration enhance the development of automated driving
technologies?
At
CARIAD, we believe that in today’s fast-paced tech world, the best innovation
happens through collaboration. That’s what the Automated Driving Alliance is
about–a partnership of strengths. We are bringing together our best software
engineers, combining our deep expertise in data-driven development and AI. In
addition to that, we have decades of experience in volume production,
scalability, and the industrialization of driving systems. Our shared,
cutting-edge development environment supports agile workflows with fast
iterations. It enables our engineers to develop, test, and implement software
updates to our test fleet several times a day. This empowers our development
across the whole product stack, from system level, through perception and
prediction to the vehicle and data acquisition as well as a data and
development ecosystem.
What
milestones have been achieved so far in this partnership, and what are the next
steps?
We
have implemented our full software stack on our target hardware and quickly
ramped up our test fleet. We are conducting test drives on public roads across
Europe, North America and Japan. And we are seeing great results. In addition,
we continuously train and improve the self-learning AI systems with real-world
and simulation data.
