Lidl and Einride bring Level 4 into retail logistics

Lidl and Einride are testing a cabless Level 4 electric truck in German retail logistics. The four-month pilot links a distribution centre with a nearby store and explores how autonomous deliveries could be scaled across Lidl’s network.

Lidl is bringing a cabless battery-electric truck into regular store-supply operations on public roads in Germany. The pilot, launched with Swedish freight-technology company Einride, is based in Edermünde in the state of Hesse, near Kassel. The vehicle runs between Lidl’s local distribution centre and a nearby store.

According to Lidl, the truck operates at SAE Level 4 on public roads and has the required approval from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority. Lidl says this makes the project one of the first practical applications of autonomous truck technology in German food retail.

How will the Level 4 truck fit into daily logistics?

The rigid electric truck can carry 15 Euro pallets and is intended to handle dry-goods deliveries on the pilot route. Up to three journeys per day are planned. Over the four-month trial, the vehicle could transport more than 3,000 pallets.

For the German retailer, the aim is to assess autonomous logistics in day-to-day operations rather than test the vehicle in isolation. “With this innovative project, we are testing a technological milestone step by step and safely in real-world operation to see how future-ready solutions can best be integrated into our logistics,” said Thomas Dangelmayer, Head of Operational Logistics at Lidl Germany.

Where could Lidl scale autonomous deliveries next?

Lidl points to its German network of 39 administrative and distribution centres and more than 3,250 stores. The highly standardised structure could provide a basis for scaling autonomous transport beyond individual pilots. After the first trial phase, the company plans a multi-stop “milk-run” model at another location.

The project was initiated by corporate and digital units within Lidl’s parent group. The longer-term objective is to develop supply chains that can adopt new transport technologies without disrupting established logistics processes. As fleets become more automated, digital infrastructure for scalable mobility services will also become increasingly important.

Why is Germany important for autonomous freight?

Einride sees Germany as a strategic market and already operates autonomous transport solutions in Europe and the US. CEO Roozbeh Charli said Germany is one of the company’s key markets and described bringing the technology onto public roads in Europe’s largest road-freight market as an important step.

The pilot also fits a broader shift as Level 4 services move into public operation in Germany. Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport, described autonomous and zero-emission driving as a reality on German roads and said projects such as this can strengthen the country’s technological competitiveness.
