How Geely plans to share road safety data in Europe

Geely is joining Europe’s Data for Road Safety ecosystem as the first Chinese carmaker in the initiative. The move will allow anonymised hazard data to be shared in real time with infrastructure, emergency services and connected vehicles, while supporting European connected-safety functions.

Geely is expanding its European activities by joining the Data for Road Safety initiative. According to the company, it is the first Chinese carmaker to become part of the European ecosystem for exchanging safety-relevant traffic information.

Through the initiative, Geely wants to share anonymised road hazard information in real time with traffic infrastructure, emergency services and other connected vehicles. The data may include sudden weather events, slippery road surfaces or broken-down vehicles. The aim is to improve road safety by giving all participants a more accurate view of what is happening on and around the road.

Why data sharing matters for road safety

The European Data for Road Safety ecosystem is intended to provide an operational basis for cooperative road safety services. It supports the implementation of Europe’s ITS framework for intelligent transport systems and is also linked to the wider effort to integrate vehicle and environment data into modern safety concepts.

For carmakers, this changes the role of the vehicle. A connected car is no longer only a receiver of warnings or services. It can also become a sensor node in a wider traffic system, sending anonymised vehicle signals into a shared data space where they can help other road users, public authorities and infrastructure operators react more quickly.

That makes the quality, availability and governance of the data increasingly important. Hazard warnings are only useful if they are timely, accurate and processed in a way that protects drivers’ privacy. For Europe, where data protection requirements are strict, participation in such an ecosystem also requires a clear technical and legal framework.

What Geely gains from the DFRS link

For Geely, the connection to Data for Road Safety also has a strategic dimension. The company is creating the conditions to align its driver assistance systems in Europe with existing requirements for connected safety functions. At the same time, it must ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks such as the General Data Protection Regulation.

The move therefore supports more than a single data-sharing use case. It helps Geely understand how European safety ecosystems work in practice, how vehicle-generated information can be used beyond the individual car and how future assistance and automated functions may depend on cross-industry cooperation.

Li Bo, Director of the Intelligent Driving Centre at the Geely Automobile Research Institute, described safety as a core value for Geely and a shared responsibility across the mobility ecosystem. He said that, while the company continues to develop active and passive safety functions in its vehicles, the real-time exchange of hazard information through the DFRS system adds another layer of shared protection for all road users.

Where the European strategy fits in

Beyond the technical connection, Geely sees its participation in DFRS as part of its long-term European strategy. The company wants to work more closely with European OEMs, public authorities and technology partners, while also becoming more involved in the development of future safety standards.

The platform also gives Geely deeper access to the evolution of connected safety solutions in Europe. That matters because future driver assistance and automation functions are unlikely to develop in isolation. They will depend on data flows between vehicles, infrastructure and service providers, as well as on clear rules for responsibility, privacy and operational reliability.

In that sense, Geely’s participation in Data for Road Safety is both a safety measure and a market signal. It shows that the company is not only expanding its European presence through products and sales, but also through participation in the regulatory and data ecosystem that will shape future mobility services.

The step also underlines a broader shift in the industry. Safety is increasingly becoming a cooperative function. Vehicles, cloud platforms, infrastructure operators, authorities and emergency services all have to exchange information in a controlled way if connected safety is to move from isolated features to a more integrated road system.
