Xpeng brings Google Maps to vehicles outside China

Xpeng is bringing Google Maps into vehicles sold outside China. The integration keeps the carmaker’s own interface while adding live traffic data, EV route planning and map support for selected driver-assistance functions.

Chinese EV manufacturer Xpeng is adding Google technology to its digital vehicle experience. For models sold outside China, the carmaker will develop its own navigation solution using the Google Maps Auto SDK. The interface remains fully embedded in Xpeng’s operating environment, while Google provides the underlying map data and navigation functions.

According to Xpeng, drivers will gain access to real-time traffic information, intelligent route guidance, point-of-interest search and vehicle-specific charging and range planning. The system is built directly into the car, so users do not need a separate Google Maps app or smartphone mirroring. Google is expanding its role in the automotive cockpit, while Xpeng retains control of the visible user experience.

How does Xpeng keep control of the user interface?

Xpeng says the familiar look and interaction logic will remain unchanged. Map presentation, rendering and the overall interaction concept continue to be designed by the manufacturer. The Google Maps Auto SDK provides the technical basis beneath that layer, allowing OEMs to build their own navigation experience on Google’s mapping technology.

The available services include real-time traffic data, EV route planning and place search, as well as energy estimates for route and charging decisions. Xpeng says it is the first carmaker from the Asia-Pacific region to deploy the Google Maps Auto SDK in a production vehicle. In China, Xpeng will continue to use the Amap, also known as AutoNavi, navigation stack.

Why does the integration go beyond navigation?

The map services are also intended to support Xpeng’s driver-assistance systems in selected international markets. Xpeng plans to use Google in-vehicle map data for NGP, its Navigation Guided Pilot, and for XPilot Assist. This links navigation data more closely with software-enabled assistance in everyday traffic, with the aim of improving route guidance and supporting automated driving functions more precisely.
