Continental establishes unit for semiconductors and electronics
AESS is intended to contribute to strengthening Continental's position as a manufacturer of automotive components as part of the central function Operations and Technology.
Continental
Continental's automotive division has established a new business unit for the development and production of electronics and semiconductor solutions: Advanced Electronics & Semiconductor Solutions (AESS). The manufacturing partner will be GlobalFoundries.
In the course of the spin-off as an independent company Aumovio, Continental's Automotive division has established the business unit AESS. It is intended to develop and verify semiconductors for the automotive industry, primarily with the aim of meeting internal corporate demand. The new unit will manufacture at semiconductor specialist GlobalFoundries.
"The establishment of this semiconductor organisation will strengthen Continental's position not only by reducing geopolitical risks but also by achieving greater independence in this area," says Philipp von Hirschheydt, member of the Continental Executive Board and CEO of Aumovio. The escalating situation in Iran and the associated potential blockade of the Strait of Hormuz are at least timely argumentative supports for this corporate strategy.
Internal development and verification
The demand from the automotive industry for semiconductors to expand the electronics share in software-defined vehicles is continuously increasing. According to Continental - the group refers to various market studies - the global market for automotive semiconductors is expected to reach 110 billion euros by 2032. Therefore, Continental considers it essential to invest in semiconductor development to be successful in the long term.
AESS is to develop and verify the semiconductors internally, while the production line is set up at GF to manufacture these semiconductors exclusively for Continental Automotive. This model - where development takes place in-house but manufacturing is outsourced - is referred to as "fabless".
"We look forward to the further development of supply chains for automotive semiconductors," said Niels Anderskouv, President and Chief Operating Officer of GlobalFoundries, highlighting the company's global presence and its portfolio of process technologies specifically for the automotive industry.
