The new electric Mercedes GLC is currently stealing the spotlight. But GLE and GLS are not stepping aside just yet. The large SUVs are receiving a major update with a redesigned cockpit, new software and revised combustion engines.

Mercedes is preparing a significant model update for the GLE and GLS. As confirmed by the German manufacturer during recent test drives, the large SUVs built at the Tuscaloosa plant in the United States will return this autumn with an updated design, a more digitalised cockpit featuring a new operating system, and a revised generation of petrol engines. At the same time, the manufacturer is also refreshing the GLE Coupé and the Maybach version of the GLS.

Superscreen cockpit and updated mild-hybrid engine

Alongside the usual exterior revisions at the front and rear, the interior in particular reflects the scale of the update. The cockpit will now feature the so-called Superscreen, which extends across the entire width of the dashboard. The display runs a new software environment based on Mercedes’ proprietary MB.OS operating system, which promises simplified operation as well as expanded information and entertainment functions.

However, the most significant changes lie under the bonnet. While Mercedes continues to push electrification with models such as the GLC and GLB, the company is also further refining its combustion engine portfolio for the GLE and GLS. All engines have been revised and are now paired with a 17 kW (23 hp) starter generator that provides mild-hybrid support.

Six- and eight-cylinder engines remain available

For Europe, the entry-level configuration will be based on a three-litre inline six-cylinder engine. In diesel form, it delivers either 245 kW (333 hp) or 270 kW (367 hp), while the petrol version produces 280 kW (381 hp).

Mercedes GLE and GLS update: key facts

What is changing? Mercedes is updating the GLE and GLS with a redesigned cockpit featuring the Superscreen display and the new MB.OS software platform.

When will the update arrive? The revised models are expected to launch in autumn following production at Mercedes’ Tuscaloosa plant in the United States.

Which powertrains will be available? Revised six- and eight-cylinder engines will remain available, supported by a 17 kW mild-hybrid system. A plug-in hybrid with around 100 km electric range will also continue.

The engine also features an electric compressor designed to eliminate turbo lag and deliver stronger acceleration when pulling away or overtaking. In addition, the SUVs adopt the updated V8 engine from the revised S-Class. In this application, the engine produces 395 kW (537 hp).

As a compromise for customers seeking electrified mobility, Mercedes will also continue to offer a plug-in hybrid variant. The system combines a six-cylinder combustion engine with an electric motor delivering 125 kW (170 hp) and enables an electric range of around 100 kilometres. Unlike the previous generation, the hybrid system is now based on a six-cylinder rather than a four-cylinder engine. According to Mercedes, the combustion engine in this configuration delivers 240 kW (326 hp).
